Regal Orbs and Chaos Orbs are two of the most frequently used currencies in PoE 2’s crafting ecosystem, but they serve very different purposes. Choosing the right one at the right time can save you enormous amounts of currency, especially early in a league when every orb matters and poe 2 currency for sale becomes noticeably scarce. The key is understanding how item quality, affix potential, and long-term gearing goals interact with each crafting method. When used correctly, both orbs can upgrade your gear dramatically—when used incorrectly, they drain your resources with nothing to show for it.
Chaos Orbs are best used when you need a full reroll. They completely regenerate a rare item’s affixes, making them great for experimentation or for resetting items with bad rolls. The downside is unpredictability. Even on a great base, Chaos Orbs carry the highest randomness among mid-tier crafting options. This makes them ideal for items with weak starting mods or bases that you want to “fish” good rolls on. But Chaos Orbs become inefficient on high-quality items that already have valuable affixes, because they wipe the slate clean and replace everything with pure RNG.
Regal Orbs, on the other hand, shine when you already have a strong base with one or two powerful magic affixes. They convert a blue item into a rare and add a single random affix. This makes them more controlled and significantly less wasteful compared to Chaos Orbs—provided the item you're working with has excellent potential. For example, a magic weapon with a high-tier damage prefix and a perfect attack speed suffix is an ideal Regal candidate. The Regal affix might be good or bad, but the two existing top-tier mods remain untouched, making the resulting rare item a far better foundation for further crafting.
Item quality is the deciding factor between these two orbs. If a rare item is already strong but flawed in several slots, Chaos Orbs are a gamble but might fix multiple problems at once. If the item is blue and already contains nearly perfect affixes, Regalling is almost always the superior choice. Many skilled crafters avoid Chaos Orbs entirely on high-potential items because of how easy it is to lose irreplaceable affixes. In contrast, Regal Orbs represent controlled progress rather than chaos-driven gambling.
Another factor to consider is your long-term crafting plan. Chaos Orbs work best for throwaway upgrades and experiments on gear you expect to replace quickly. Regal Orbs support a more structured approach—especially when combined with bench crafting, meta-crafting modifiers, or later high-value slam orbs. This is also where the value of cheap poe 2 currency becomes apparent; players who plan their upgrades carefully tend to accumulate orbs instead of wasting them, letting them invest more aggressively into premium end-game gear.
The choice between Regal and Chaos Orbs comes down to two questions: How good is the item already, and how committed are you to improving it? Use Chaos for resets, use Regal for refinement, and you’ll craft smarter, spend less, and progress faster.
